Our Story
Everyone has a story in which we believe God is at work and desires to use for His glory. This is ours.

Laying the Foundation
After years of consulting with clients about their financial goals and investments as their CPA, our founder, David Carter, started our predecessor company, Carter Asset Management, in 1997. At the time, David was also an adjunct professor in the College of Business Administration at Abilene Christian University.
His undergraduate Personal Financial Planning class was one of the most popular and practical courses on campus, but it was in a graduate course for Master of Accountancy students that he was introduced to his successor and our current president, Cary Beard. That graduate class is also what sparked Cary's desire to serve individuals and families as a financial planner and wealth advisor.

A Great Partnership
David left the university in 2000, allowing him to focus even more of his time on serving clients. His search for additional help for his growing firm led him to contact Cary in 2005, who had himself begun working with a financial advisory firm in Dallas in 2000.
Both were confident that God was at work to bring them together professionally, and Cary joined Carter Asset Management in December 2005 as its second advisor, and with the intent that he would one day succeed David as the owner and President, which took place in 2018.

Reaching Capacity
With the addition of another advisor, the firm continued to experience tremendous growth, both in the number clients we are honored to serve and the members of our team. Over time, the historical home built in 1925 by Abilene's greatest entrepreneur, H.O. Wooten, was filled to capacity. The beautiful, craftsman house on Beech Street served as our cozy and comfortable home for more than 20 years.
But to have the capacity to add great members to our team so that we can continue to provide clients with the service they deserve and prepare the firm for the next generation, significant changes would be necessary.

A New Home
After extensive research to determine the best location for a new office facility, a great parcel of land on the south side of town was obtained and a detailed process ensued to design and construct the building that would allow us to double our workforce and serve future generations of clients.
Ground was broken in July 2022, and we moved into our new home on Central Park Blvd in September 2023.

A New Name
With the new home, we felt it was also best to rebrand the firm with a new name, because the small company started by David Carter in 1997 had become larger and more impactful than any one or two people.
Named for the middle names of Cary's two grandfathers, Joe William, a farmer, and Fred Madison, a welder and blacksmith, William Madison Advisors endeavors to build upon the outstanding foundation laid by our founder and is committed to hard work and continuing a legacy of service and dedication to others.
